WHAT YOU GET AT A JUST FIDDLING WORKSHOP

8 hours tuition in fiddling - Celtic, Cajun, Bluegrass & Gypsy

All music supplied, with most tunes having accompanying easy parts and chords for ‘shuffles’

Good grounding in playing tunes in a non-classical way, so they sound like fiddle tunes not classical studies

There is a big emphasis on memorising tunes. The melodic tunes are an easy and enjoyable way to improve this skill.

Tunes are excellent busking material [read: good earning potential on the streets of Perth!]

The concert/bush dance provides a reason for learning the tunes by memory, so there is a defined goal. This motivates practice.

Concert performance

WHO IS SUITED TO THIS WORKSHOP?

This workshop caters for all levels of violin playing: most tunes have easy parts, however students would need to have been playing for 2 years.

A very limited number of cello places are available.

THE CONCERT/BUSH DANCE

The aim of the concert/bush dance is to give fiddlers a chance to play their newly learnt tunes in a “safety-in-numbers” environment.

All dances are “called” (taught) so no experience is necessary!

The dance is a family affair suitable for 5 - 85 year-olds.

JUST FIDDLING  was founded by Albany violin teachers Mike Hyder & Margaret Gunson in 2002 to encourage their classical students to do some playing in the holidays.

It has been enormously successful in the Albany region with over 65 fiddlers attending regular workshops and performing at functions and festivals including Fairbridge Festival & the National Folk Festival in Canberra.

The teachers...

MARGARET GUNSON began violin in Queensland before studying at the Tasmanian Conservatorium of Music with Jan Sedivka, followed by further studies at the North-West German Academy with Tibor Varga. After working in an Opera Orchestra in Germany she joined the Sydney Symphony before moving to  WA and playing with WASO where she held a principal position. Following a car crash which left her unable to play the violin she settled in Albany where she plays the viola upside-down in the Albany String Quartet and encourages young people to enjoy the experience of torturing cat-gut with horse hair.

MIKE HYDER learnt violin from Vince Edwards & Wilf Jones at the Canberra School of Music. A scientific career interrupted his playing but 2 years of playing fiddle with well-known Sydney band “SKEWIFF” prevented the total seizure of both hands. He now is a passionate player of different genres: he leads the Albany String Quartet & Albany Chamber Orchestra, has toured with “The Waifs”, plays fiddle in various groups around Albany and coaches wonderful violin students in the art of playing violin with passion, flair & enjoyment.

MARGARET CROSSEN began learning double bass with Brian Bursey after winning a music scholarship to Perth Modern School, and later continued her studies with Joan Wright whilst completing a Bachelor of Education at WA College of Advanced Education. She played with the WA Youth Orchestra and the WA Youth Concert Band (with whom she has toured nationally and internationally) and later with the WA Symphonic Wind Ensemble and various chamber groups, jazz bands and musical theatre groups in Perth.

Margaret has spent the past 20 years teaching double bass and cello for the WA Education Department's School of Instrumental Music as well as conducting various string groups around Perth. She moved to Albany in 2004 where she managed to give birth to her second son in a moving car and continues to teach bass and cello, co-conduct the Albany Youth Orchestra, and playing bass with the Albany Chamber Orchestra, "Just Fiddling", and "Crossbow".

All three teachers bring their considerable technical skills to teach fiddling so that tunes sound like fiddle tunes, not classical studies!  And they all have fun….!!
